How to Winterize Outdoor Faucets and Prevent Frozen Pipes

Step-by-Step: How to Winterize Your Outdoor Faucets

Step 1: Locate Your Interior Shutoff Valves

Every outdoor faucet should have a dedicated shutoff valve inside your home. These are typically found in the basement, crawl space, or utility room, along the wall where the outdoor faucet exits the house.

Look for a small valve (usually a gate valve with a round handle or a ball valve with a lever handle) on the pipe that leads to each outdoor faucet. In some homes, especially those built before 1970, there may not be individual shutoff valves for outdoor faucets. If that is the case, you have two options:

Winterizing a frost-free faucet:

  2. Open the faucet for 30 seconds to drain any water from the stem

You do not need to shut off an interior valve for frost-free faucets unless you have reason to believe the faucet is damaged or not functioning properly. The design handles freezing temperatures on its own, but only if no hose is attached.
